The 2005 Liberty League End-of-Season Awards, announced February 24.
2005 Liberty League Player of the Year
Dana Martin Skidmore
Senior Guard (Stowe, Vermont)
A five-time selection as the Liberty League Guard of the Week, Martin led the
league in scoring averaging 21.9 points per game overall and 23.6 points per
game in league play. Martin is currently fourth on Skidmore's all-time scoring
list (1,441 points) after scoring 10 points or more in 22 of 23 appearances
this season, including eight 25+ point outings. Also a two-time ECAC Upstate
Player of the Week, Martin set Skidmore school records this season for
three-point field goals made in a game (eight) and free throws made in a game
(14).
2005 Liberty League Rookie of the Year
Lawrence Avitabile Vassar
Forward (Southington, Connecticut)
Lawrence Avitabile, a starter in all 24 games, was named Liberty League Rookie
of the Week seven times, Forward of the Week once and the ECAC Upstate
co-Player of the Week once. In a sensational debut season, he led the Brewers
in scoring, rebounding, blocks, steals and field goal percentage. He ranked
among the top seven in all Liberty League statistical categories, including
leading the league in blocked shots. He was fourth in rebounding, seventh in
scoring, fifth in field goal percentage and fifth in steals.
2005 Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year
Rich Roche Hobart
Coach Roche led the Statesmen to their first outright regular season conference crown with the third highest single season win total in the 95-season history of Hobart basketball. The Statesmen made a dramatic turnaround from last season, improving six games in the overall win column and reversing their conference record from 4-10 a year ago to 10-4 this season.
Roche was assisted this season by Joe Wojtylko, Dennis Pysnack, Carl Wenzel, Woody Kampmann.
