The 2005 Liberty League End-of-Season Awards, announced June 22.
2005 Liberty League Crew of the Year
Varsity Eight William Smith
The William Smith varsity 8 boat of Mandy Lassell, Jessica Mahon, Laura
Batchelor, Cassie Priest, Edwina Wilson, Courtney Cioffredi, Nicole Balsamo,
Liz Staino, and Lauren Brady posted two victories and a pair of runner-up
finishes in six races this spring. Undefeated against conference opponents, the
Herons outraced Vassar and Union in a makeshift regatta after the Liberty
League Championship was cancelled. William Smith also advanced to the grand
final of the New York State Championships, finishing fourth behind Division I
schools Marist and Colgate and defending national champion Ithaca.
2005 Liberty League Novice Crew of the Year
Novice Eight William Smith
The novice 8 comprised of Julie Kozarsky, Jennifer Kirst, Jessica Wojslaw,
Courtney Cioffredi, Megan Seiter, Lucinda Keck, Whitney Hayre, Jennifer Lever,
and Hannah Gallup were outstanding all season, finishing the year undefeated in
five races. The Herons dominated Liberty League opponents in the makeshift
regatta at Union after the cancellation of the Liberty League Championships.
William Smith outraced runner-up Skidmore by eight seconds. The crew also
upended Division I Marist early in the season, winning by 31 seconds.
2005 Liberty League Coach of the Year
Sandra Chu William Smith
In her third season at the helm, Chu helped the Herons to a successful spring
season. Under her guidance the varsity 8 boat captured a pair of victories and
and runner-up finish in six races. In a makeshift regatta after the league
championships were cancelled, the varsity 8 outraced conference foes Vassar and
Union. The second varsity 8 also has flourished, earning three wins and one
runner-up. The novice boats finished the year undefeated, including a gold
medal win in the novice 4 race at the New York State Championships.
