2008 Liberty League Player of the Year
Jay Jay Vanderstyne Rochester
Senior 2B (Victor, NY)
Vanderstyne batted .437 for the Yellowjackets this season, including a .493 average in Liberty League play.
He drove in 32 runs and reached base at a .580 percentage in league games, best among all league players in
both categories. His 17 doubles overall set a new team record and ranked second among all league players.
2008 Liberty League Pitcher of the Year
Joe Zongol Rensselaer
Senior (Flower Mound, TX)
A five-time Liberty League Pitcher of the Week, Zongol leads the Red Hawks in games started, wins, earned run average, complete games, shutouts, innings pitched,
strikeouts and opponents batting average. He allowed only six extra base hits on the season, five of which were doubles.
He also leads the Liberty League in several categories, including wins, earned run average, innings pitched, games started and shutouts.
He allowed one or fewer earned runs in eight of 10 starts, and his 1.71 ERA ranks 21st nationally for games through May 4.
2008 Liberty League Rookie of the Year
Nick Laracuente Skidmore
Pitcher (Tenafly, NJ)
Skidmore's top pitcher as a freshman, Laracuente allowed more than two earned runs only once in 11 games played.
His 2.72 earned run average ranks fourth among all league pitchers while his 17 total runs allowed ranks second.
He pitched complete game victories over Clarkson, Union, and Vassar and surrendered only 11 walks in 46.1 innings.
2008 Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year
Joe Reina Rochester
Reina guided Rochester to its first outright Liberty League title at 18-4 and earned the right to host the
league's championship tournament. The Yellowjackets are 27-11 overall heading into the tournament and have
been ranked in the last two ABCA Division III polls.
